Jock Deasey writes (in 2010): "I visited Joel's mother after his death. The family lived on Delancey Place in downtown Philadelphia. After fifty years, my recollections are a bit hazy but I seem to remember that his mother told us that Joel was studying in Berlin at the time and was on his way to the opera. He was rushing to catch a subway and fell between the cars onto the tracks. I don't know how any parent can find the strength to deal with the loss of a child."
